THE WORLD OF JESUS' TIME Life in Galilee. Chapter Two. THE WORLD OF JESUS'
TIME. Life in Galilee. Jerusalem. Society and politics. Jesus was a
Palestinian Jew. He would have grown up with stories of conquest and
oppression. These stories recounted the many waves of foreign invasion that
sought to subjugate the Jewish people.
Although life was hard for the ordinary people of Jesus' day, it had its
lighter moments. Feasting, singing, story-telling and dancing all had their
place as recreational activities. Games, both indoor and outdoor, were also
popular.
So, if Jesus went up to Passover in 30 A.D. and cleansed the temple the first
time (the second time was during the passion week), they could say the temple
took 46 years to build. Again, this indicates that Jesus was baptized in the
fall of 29, A.D., and in the spring of 30 A.D. was at the Passover when he
spoke of the raising up the temple. THE SITE ABOVE IS EXCELLENT WITH MANY,

Jesus lived in PALESTINE, a country in the Middle East. Palestine is also
known as Israel or the Holy Land. * There were three main areas of Palestine
in Jesus’ time. These were: GALILEE, SAMARIA, and JUDEA. 1. Galilee was mostly
a rural area (farming area) where Greek and Roman cultures were popular. *

The Jewish World of Jesus: An Overview. “Judaism” in the time of Jesus is more
properly designated “Judaisms” as it can include a rich variety of forms and
practices that flourished during late Second Temple times (200 B.C.E.-70
C.E.). In one way or the other this diverse “Jewish” culture traces itself
back to the Hebrew Bible and the history of the ancient Israelites.
What We Learned
There is a book called All need to know I learned in Kindergarten. You learn to hold hands and stick with your buddy, to clean up after your own mess, and that naps are good for you. That’s all great advice for life.
What we have just read in today’s lesson gives us more good life advice.
Mary‘s visit to Elizabeth tells me that family is important.
Being born in a stable shows me that having a clean house is overrated.
The innkeeper shows me that there is always room for one more.
The angel tells me not to be afraid.
The multitude shows that when you know God you can’t help praising him.
The shepherds obeyed immediately the command to go and see. Often we need to stop what we are doing and notice.
Herod teaches me that you can’t outsmart God.
Joseph shows us that even when you're parenting God’s son you still have to pay your taxes.
Mary pondered, wondered, contemplated all these things, we are not to live an unexamined life.
The Wisemen studied, prepared, and then acted in faith on what they had learned. They were willing to be inconvenienced, and have their life interrupted.
Life with God is a journey, and an adventure, if you follow Him.
